Making Your Mark: Creativity and the Ceramic Surface

What do I want to say? What choices make this surface feel like mine? What happens if I push this technique further? What happens if I combine two things that don’t usually go together?

In this 10-day workshop, we’ll push beyond technique-for-technique’s-sake and explore the ceramic surface as a place for experimentation, intention, and creative risk-taking. Surface begins the moment we build—whether throwing or handbuilding—and continues through every stage of the clay process, from wet clay to leather hard, bone dry, bisque, and glaze.

“At Monterey Peninsula College, we’ve had the pleasure of multiple visits with Eva Lys Champagne. She has enriched the Ceramics program with a workshop in surface design that combined the basic principles and elements of design with experimental surface techniques that were both structured and loose. Participants were presented with an inspired way of working in a series to develop layered ideas and patterns. Some years ago, Eva traveled to Monterey for her exhibition of ceramic forms at the MPC Art Gallery. The show, and her lectures accompanying it, addressed the liminal zone where water meets land and the concept of pushing and examining boundaries. At the end of the exhibit, she generously gifted a large installation to the college which has lived amongst the trees outside of the ceramics building ever since. Eva’s extensive travels throughout the world give her many resources to draw on. She has a wealth of information to share, but most of all, it’s her personality that shines.
